Region Rendering

Region Rendering, sometimes known as border rendering, is a technique more often used in pre-rendered images than in interactive VR or AR displays. However it is fundamentally compatible with both, and is a means of reducing the render workload, speeding the creation of the next frame.

Simply put, region rendering is when only a portion of the field of view is fully rendered, rather than the full thing. In pre-rendering it is often used as a tool to quickly get an idea what the final image will look like, without having to wait for the full thing to render. This saves time if the end result isn't what was hoped for.

In interactive virtual reality and augmented reality environments the concept is the same, though the reasoning is a little different.

In these interactive environments, maximising render speed is a priority. If you're going to be rendering interactively, at least 30 different renders per second are a necessity, and at least 60 it more ideal. Inevitably of course, this means the possible level of detail is much lower than a pre-rendered scene.

By using region rendering, you can skip the rendering process altogether for any areas of the environment which haven't visibly changed between frames. Thus it's possible to squeeze out more render frames per second, greater detail of render, or both, compared to rendering the entire field of view each time.
